Happy Peepster

I'm very  burnt out with my day job and have been dreaming of a career change.  Let me tell you, a career in cake baking is not in my future.

I first saw the Taste of Home Sunflower Peep cake at First Draught Farm's Peep Show.  I thought, "That's adorable and looks so easy!"  I'm not sure what I did wrong, but both layers of the cake stuck in the pans and cracked & crumbled when I removed them.  Perhaps they were in the pans too long.  They were to cool for 10 minutes before removal, but I fell asleep while watching a re-run of the show Bones. Bones is not a boring show; it is one of my favorites.  But I tend to fall asleep when watching TV.  Ask my husband.  There are many shows and movies to which I don't know the ending.

So here's my Peep cake:

It is gingerly held together by gobs and gobs of chocolate frosting, like glue.

If you are like me, and prefer just a little bit of cake with your frosting then it will still be delicious.  I'm just not sure what's going to happen when we make that first cut.

Nobody in our family will suffer from a lack of sugar today; or from a lack of Peeps.

It is a rather dreary, foggy Easter morning here.

This is a difficult time of year for me in Colorado.  After a long, cold winter I'm longing for Springtime warmth and sunshine.   But at this altitude, warmth and sunshine are not ready to make a consistent appearance.  They just briefly tease us between cold snaps.

Misty still has that big bump on the side of her face.  Her recovery from the slab fracture has been slow and frustrating.  The hole in her gum was very deep and narrow and, while it is healing, it keeps getting packed with food which seems to slow the process.  The vet has cleaned it out and repacked it with dental wax several times. We return to the vet tomorrow to see what is going on in there.  We expected her to be completely healed by now and I'm eager for her to be well enough to return to training.

Have a Happy Easter.

  1. I think the cake turned out great! I'm a horrible cook/baker so I've done way worse lol. So long as it tastes great that's all that matters. I'm just not good at the pretty part of cooking.

I feel for you on the winter/spring thing. That's why I could never live out where you do. I'd go crazy! I hope it warms up soon.

Poor Misty! Chrome's puncture wound on his hock took forever to heal too. I thought it never would and then all of a sudden it was scabbed over and pretty. I hope her's heals soon.

  4. You are an intrepid baker to even have attempted that. If you don't want the leftovers, you can always put them in the microwave!

Good luck with Misty getting all better. She's such a sweetie.

  5. Hi! I followed you over from Shirley's blog. I am a lifelong horse crazed girl. All grown up now, but in my heart I'm still riding in the Grand National with Velvet Brown. So glad to meet you. I hope that Misty feels better day by day. Still cold here in Idaho too. I'm your newest follower. Bentley and I hope that you will stop by and visit our cottage too.

    Love,
    Susan and Bentley

  6. The cake looks fun. Also you are never supposed to admit your mistakes. However you present it is your creative take on the original!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. It's fun to find another Colorado horse blogger, especially one with a draft! We are in the Elizabeth area at 6,800'.
    Hope Misty heals quickly.

  9. I think your Peep cake looks wonderful. I can't cook worth a darn myself. I'm surprised to see that Misty still hasn't healed. It seems like this all started quite a while ago, but I have no sense of time at the moment.
