Go See War Horse

This is a good movie.

I was apprehensive about seeing it.  I'm glad I did.

It is full of life, death, joy, and sadness.  There is grief, loss, hope, cowardice, bravery, cruelty, kindness, fear, and friendship.  A little of everything.

And of course, there are horses.

There is a lot of action, a lot of war.  You know that from the title.  Some scenes may be tough to watch if you are like me, an amiable person who does not like conflict.   Just say to yourself over and over: it is just a movie.

It is sprinkled with humor, which I appreciated very much.

I liked it.

Go see War Horse.

I heard the movie provokes some discussion about war.  That's true.

The story is set during World War I.  Seated next to me in the theater was a World War II veteran.  After the movie, while the credits were rolling, his granddaughter asked him, "Grandpa, was that how it was for you in World War II?"  He replied, "No, we didn't fight in the trenches."  She asked, "Did you use horses?"  He said, "No, we used artillery."

My husband and I had an interesting discussion on the drive home about the raw brutality of trench warfare, and about the emergence of  tanks and big guns; the absence of air combat.

Take some tissue with you.  Steven Spielberg is a master at tugging on heart strings.

Go see War Horse.

To coin a phrase, I give it two thumbs up.

  1. I'm glad to hear that you liked it - I really enjoyed the book. I think it is a great story - yes, the war was brutal - all wars are, but I think it showed some kindness amongst all of the bad stuff...

I'm going to try and see it this coming week...

  2. I agree - go see War Horse! One of THE BEST movies I've seen in a VERY VERY VERY long time. It's everything you mentioned and so much more.

I too had to keep reminding myself that it was just a movie. My husband said I was hurting his hand during some scenes as I was clenching way to hard.

  3. Nice review. Glad you enjoyed the movie. I have yet to read a bad review of War Horse. I haven't been to a movie theater in years. I prefer to watch them in the comfort of home, altho it's not the same experience. I'll look forward to it's release!

  4. Thanks for the recommendation. I think I might be going with a meet up horse group next week. I'll have to remember the Kleenex!!

  5. We plan to see it as soon as we can. Glad you liked it.

  6. Thanks for the great review! I can't make it through it (I didn't make it through the trailer it that I accidently saw the other evening on tv), but my mom and Maizie are heading out to see it the second we return from our vacation. They will be so glad you gave it two thumbs up!

  7. Thanks for sharing your opinion. I've been wanting to see it but I don't go to theatres much these days, except for "those" movies that need the theatre.

I think the only way to get Mr.Ruckus to see a movie with "horse" in the title is to also put the word "war" in the title, so I might get my date night ;-)

  8. If I get a chance to watch it I will but I'm almost scared that I'll hate what happens...I'm a coward that way. Thanks for dropping by and commenting too b.t.w. Happy New Year!

  9. Happy New Year to you and all the best in 2012. I want to see the movie, I hate going to the theatre but I think this movie would need to be seen on the big problem with going to see it is I'm positive I will embarrass myself and cry through most of it.I really hate not being able to control that. We'll see.Good review though thanks.

  10. Thanks for the review. I want to see this movie and after reading your opinions, I'll definitely go see it. It sounds great (although I am duly warned about bring tissues).

  11. I saw it and really enjoyed it, too. Anything with horses!!

  12. Thanks for the review. I'm planning on seeing it very soon,

  13. Ooooh I absolutely cannot wait to see this movie! We'll likely wait for the DVD though (as DD needs the closed captioning).
    Thanks for the review ;o)

  14. The noise of the war scenes really overwhelmed me! Wow was it loud!!
I had to close my eyes when he ran through the barb wire! I know what that crap does, couldnt stand it!!!
No real horse would have lived through that!! sheesh LOL
I did like it though overall! And I cried at the end!!

  15. I agree with reddunappy. No horse would have survived running through all of that barbed wire.

I liked the movie, except for the beginning. The way he explained things to the horse was just dumb. I know we all talk to our horses, but that was excessive. I didn't let that ruin it for me though. Enjoyed it very much.
